Sony, Insomniac Games Make Big Announcements at Gamescom
August 17th, 2010 | Written by Chris Selogy | Topic: Industry News, PlayStation 3Though Gamescom hasn’t been a place for many publishers to make big announcements, Sony has followed up their PS3 Slim and price drop announcements at 2009′s Gamescom Convention in Cologne, Germany with two big games announcements from Insomniac Games and some other interesting bits of news during their press conference today.
The first of Insomniac’s announcements was Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, which is being made by Insomniac’s new North Carolina studio for release in Fall of 2011. This will not be a single-player Ratchet & Clank adventure that continues the story from A Crack in Time, but is instead a four-player co-op game starring Ratchet, Clank, Qwark, and Nefarious that features the same kind of action platforming gameplay that the series is known for. The drop-in/drop-out co-op can happen both online and locally, so it sounds flexible enough to work for players with friends anywhere. The trailer shows a lot of shooting and melee combat, depending on the character you’re using, along with a lot of platforming and puzzles to solve.
It looks like each character has their own quirks and abilities so that all four players have to work together to get through each level. A rope is shown in the trailer that lets one player fly a helicopter so that the others can ride along by hanging from the rope. The other co-op ability is a grab ability for Qwark and a gun for Ratchet with a similar ability to throw the others to places they can’t reach, though I wouldn’t be surprised to see those abilities being used for griefing purposes. You can check out the trailer below to see the game in action yourselves.
The second trailer was a live-action teaser for Resistance 3, which came with a lot less gameplay info for this 2011 release. The trailer shows a man walking along train tracks as a train approaches, which he gets on and rides with the other survivors as they go from the countryside into a war-torn city that obviously was destroyed by the Chimera. The train slows down while going through a tunnel as night approaches, the survivors prepare for a fight as they grab guns and check for the presence of the Chimera, which they’re coming in quickly as you see glimpses of Chimera with the little big of light that is left. The survivors fire on the Chimera and the Resistance 3 logo appears on the screen. The end gives us the notion that co-op could be a big feature for Resistance 3 that is supported by nothing but our hopes and what the teaser trailer shows.
Outside of those two trailers, Sony made some other announcements throughout the press conference. They talked numbers at first to reveal that the PS3 has reached 38 million sales worldwide and the PSP has cracked 62 million. There are two new PS3 SKUS that are coming that will replace the 120 GB Slims that are currently out there. The 160 GB PS3 will replace the $299.99 120 GB system and these new PS3s are shipping to retailers now. The 320 GB PS3 will be the system that is bundled with PlayStation Move for $399.99 when the Move launches on September 19, which is taking the opposite approach that Microsoft is doing with their $299.99 Kinect bundle with the new 4 GB Xbox 360. Sony seems to be planning for Move bundle owners to use the system for all of their gaming and multimedia needs while Microsoft hopes Kinect owners will use USB devices to upgrade if they need more space.
Sony showed off a number of games with LittleBigPlanet 2, Gran Turismo 5, and Infamous 2. The Infamous 2 trailer is of particular note because it features the first glimpse of the new Cole that looks more like the original Cole from the first Infamous game. In their talk about PlayStation Move, MAG was revealed to be a future supporter of PlayStation Move with an update coming later this year to add support for the peripheral now that SOCOM 4 was pushed to 2011. Also shown off was a bit of Virtua Tennis 4, the latest iteration of the Sega arcade tennis series that sees the return of the original developers that will support Move and 3D that hopes to be the Wii Sports Tennis for the PS3. The other big trailer during the press conference showed off Killzone 3′s multiplayer, which will be adding new melee attacks, new matchmaking, two new modes, a new ranking system, jet packs, and vehicles to the interesting Killzone 2 multiplayer that we saw early in 2008.
