E3 2010 Showfloor Preview: Red Faction: Armageddon

One liner: Easily has some of the coolest weaponry at E3

Eff this building. That’s what you want to say as your character tears away at the infrastructure of some 100-feet building in any of the most recent installments of Red Faction.

Eff this building and this monster. That’s what you say after using the magnagun (think “magnet gun”), one of the newest additions we saw in a behind-closed-doors demonstration of Red Faction: Armageddon.

The magnagun is, as hinted to, essentially a magnet gun. You select one target, then another, and first target is pulled toward the second. We saw buildings collapse as walls were ripped from their foundations and flung toward cranes, walls and large objects shot at enemies, and environments destroyed in order to create cover.

That’s right. On top of being an excellent way to pull a wall from a building (destroying said building, hence “eff this building”) and having those walls smack monsters upside the head (hence “eff this monster”), we saw an ingenious demonstration of how the new magnagun can be used in other situations. In one instance, when our demonstrator became overwhelmed by a horde of enemies, he ripped open a container with the magnagun and then repaired it using something called the Nanoforge, another new weapon that repairs destroyed structures similarly to the reconstructor gun from Red Faction Guerrilla’s multiplayer.

THQ also showed us a giant Exosuit that tore everything to shreds, but those two guns really have us most excited about the possibilities the game presents. The ability to destroy and create cover at will makes the world infinitely malleable, meaning the game could potentially offer a truly unique experience to every player.

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this game to see if it lives up to that hype, and you’ll know the final verdict when Red Faction Armageddon in March 2011.
