Widespread Bug Hits PSN; List of Problems Include Corrupted Game Data and Trophy Glitches

A widespread bug on the Playstation Network that seems to be linked to the upcoming 2012 Leap Year has caused numerous problems for many PS3 owners including a 8001050F error code that seems to pop up on PS3 systems linked to the internet.  This error code allegedly causes trophy information to be corrupted (causing players to lose the ability to earn trophies in certain games) as well as erases save files and game data on certain PSN games.  Other potential problems include users booting up a game but being kicked out and redirected to the XMB menu as well as the system’s date reverting back to 12/31/1999, further indicating the possibility of a problem with a specific date.

Not all users have been affected by this bug, however, and it seems that only users who own a Phat PS3 (one of the original models that is bigger and weighs more) are having issues with the problems mentioned.  What is more disconcerting is the fact that these PS3 systems are being affected while the users are offline while connected to the internet.

While Sony has acknowledged the situation and is working on it, many fans have flocked to Sony’s official forums in an expression of anger and concern.  If this network bug is indeed caused by the 2012 Leap Year, how did Sony not foresee this apparent problem?   In any case Sony has indeed begun maintenance on the situation judging by their posts on Twitter:

• PSN status update (part 2): Readers/followers are confirming that “slim” units (120/250 GB models) are connecting normally.
• PSN status update: We’re narrowing down the issue and continue to work to restore service to all. Updates as soon as we have them.

For now the problem seems to be affecting only those older PS3 models, but to be safe users better not log on to the PSN network or connect their PS3’s online until Sony has confirmed they fixed the problem.  Better safe than sorry.

  2. I read that this is a quite "normal" bug in a few programs, and it will fix it self the next day. Or so they say^^
