2010: Our Most Anticipated Games

2010 is the start of something fresh for all of us: it is the start of a new decade, new resolutions and more importantly plenty of new games to play.  While 2009 had its fair share of popular titles (Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2) and perhaps one of the busiest holiday seasons of recent years, 2010 is only looking even more promising.  Although we here at Gamer 2.0 try to remain objective towards all games and systems, sometimes we do tend to come down to earth and get a little overly excited for certain games.

To help ease our excitement we have put together a list of our Most Anticipated Games of 2010, complete with some obvious and not-so-obvious choices.  While most of our choices will release in the next few months, some of our choices have release dates not yet set in stone making the wait even more unbearable (if they even happen at all this year).  Continue reading on to see the list of our Editor’s picks.

Valkyria Chronicles 2 (PSP)

The first Valkyria Chronicles was a great game that gave this tired genre a face lift with a whole new approach to combat by injecting third-person shooter controls into the mix. The sequel is surprisingly coming to the PSP and the demo ensures that it’s not sacrificing anything to fit on the PSP.

Unknown Need For Speed Title (???)

While EA has not given the Need For Speed series much of an identity in the past few years, the smartest move they have made with that series is to give Criterion a shot. Being their best racing game developer, there is a lot of potential for this particular entry to be an outstanding game. As a Burnout fan, my only hope is that Criterion is not pigeonholed with making Need For Speed games for the foreseeable future and are free to return to the Burnout series when they wish to.

Bioshock 2 (Xbox 360, PS3)

Yes I know the game comes out in a few weeks but it is perhaps the biggest game on my radar at the moment.  Bioshock was one of the most engrossing and enjoyable games I have played in the last few years so this sequel has been a long time coming for me.  Controlling a Big Daddy sounds incredibly awesome and enhancing the lore of Rapture to include new and old characters will surely be a pleasure to behold.

Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth (DS)

I am going out on a limb by selecting this game ahead of some of my other more wanted titles, but I feel it is one of the most promising titles of the year.  The Ace Attorney series has always held a special niche in the gaming community and with a solid spin-off last year only good things can come out of this latest addition to the series.  3D animations, new crime scene components and witty dialogue are sure to make this another enjoyable entry into the series.

Gran Turismo 5 (PS3)

Of all the games coming out in 2010, one of the games I am chomping at the bit to play is Gran Turismo 5. Polyphony Digital have spent the last five years or so building what they believe is the best driving simulator on a home console. I look forward to seeing what the game ends up being like now that Polyphony has had the time to get used to the PS3’s hardware.

Unknown Star Fox Wii Title (Wii)

While I know that this is a remote possibility that Nintendo would have a Star Fox game in the works for the Wii, I certainly hope that they do. The Wii does have a lot of interesting technology that they could leverage to help make a great game. What they really need to do though is reboot the series and go after a slightly older audience. Knowing Nintendo though, this isn’t going to happen.

Heavy Rain (PS3)

We’ve been patiently waiting for this much touted thriller from Quantic Dream for a little over three years now, and when it drops February 23, we expect our minds to be blown away. Players will be faced with tough moral choices made those much more difficult and emotionally charged thanks to a graphics engine that thins the line even further between digital and reality. You’ll play through a variety of ‘scenes’ (the plot unfolds like a movie) where you control the lives of a cast of characters whose stories eventually converge and twist together. The game won’t be for everyone, though, as the control scheme is apparently mostly quick-time event button presses, and those looking for any sort of running and gunning action will be left behind.

All Points Bulletin (PC)

APB (All Points Bulletin) is made by Realtime Worlds, the same guys who brought us Crackdown, and the developers couldn’t have a more adequate name to describe this game. APB is a MMO set in a persistent world currently scheduled for just the PC, but we wouldn’t be too surprised to see it land on the 360 down the road. In it players choose which side of the law they want to be on, like choosing between Alliance and Horde in WoW. As enforcers, you’re constantly battling criminals to keep the streets clean, and as criminals you’re constantly battling enforcers to turn a quick buck. Remember all those games of cops and robbers you played as a kid? APB is a little like that, except with more bullets and explosions.

Golden Sun (DS)

The announcement of this game alone, to me, gave purpose to the last E3. Golden Sun will always hold a special place in my heart because it is what got me into RPG’s in the first place. Being a Genesis owner, I missed out on most of the greats on the Super Nintendo. Golden Sun on the Game Boy Advance gave me something fresh, and I’m not ashamed to say that after only two entries, this has become my favorite RPG series. The nuances and features the DS possesses will give Golden Sun new life, and the previous games challenged every capability the GBA had—I hope to see the same thing with this DS entry.

God of War III (PS3)

God of War is a prime example of a fresh new face that changed its respective system forever. Kratos is the badass son of a god who did some badass things for some badass reasons. While nothing in the plot has had any twists one might consider outrageous, the amount of enjoyment one gets from killing and destroying things in the most badass fashion just makes me wonder how this series will end.

  1. I'm so happy that you guys dosen't have FFXIII here! <3

  2. Haha. Square wants that to happen. Before Christmas, they sent me a box of 13 cookies that had "XIII" drawn on them. Just because they sent me cookies doesn't mean their game is gonna be the business! :-p
