New $299 PS3 Slims in Size and Price, Coming September 2009

It’s official: The PlayStation 3 has discovered the Atkins diet. After months of speculation which led to a post early this morning about the abundance of PS3 Slim ads popping up around the net, Sony officially announced their new $299 PlayStation 3 Slim model at the GamesCom convention in Cologne, Germany.

Announced alongside a slew of new XMB features (which we will be outlining and rating soon), the PS3 Slim will function just like the current PS3 along with a 120GB hard drive, but will be 33% slimmer and 36% lighter. The PS3 Slim will retail for $299 and land in the first week of September. That’s right, just about 3 weeks away.

This could be a potentially huge win for Sony who’s faced criticism from many over its price point, including the now-famous “or else” threat from Activision CEO Bobby Kotik. Though this price drop has obviously been in the cards for some time, Sony may have finally decided now was the time based on the fact that its weekly PS3 sales figures have been slipping as of late while the Xbox 360′s have been gaining ground(check the image below).
