$299 PlayStation 3 and Xbox Ads Abound, Inspires Artistry

Well, not artistry in the typical sense. With widespread rumors of a PlayStation 3 price cut coming out of Gamescom, fake and not-so-fake appearances of the $299 PlayStation 3 Slim have sprouted all over the web. Here’s a collection of all of the ads we’ve seen around the Web (let us know if we missed any):

So what’s the deal with all of these and are they legit?

Best Buy: The first two images in the gallery are from supposed Best Buy ads. Unfortunately, it all seems to be a hoax if it employs the techniques used for the Kmart ad (more on that in a bit).

FYE: FYE isn’t exactly a national electronics retailer, so some of you may not be familiar with them. If not, then…well, they’re an electronics retailer. It may seem more legit since it’s a picture of a poster and not a photoshop screen, but it’s hard to tell. Not only would there need to be a pretty decent photoshop job, but whoever did it would have to get some high quality printing done to emulate the poster. I personally would never go through all that work in order to dupe people, but that doesn’t mean that kind of guy doesn’t exist.

GameStop: The lone Xbox 360 Elite ad in this collection supposedly comes way of GameStop. Unfortunately, the imagery looks pretty weak and suspect, especially the picture of the console itself. Additionally, the image isn’t big enough to show the GameStop logo and other sales around it which makes it really stink of poor Photoshoppery. If true, it would mean the Xbox 360 Elite would match the PS3′s $299 price point.

Kmart: The Kmart online listing is the only solid piece of evidence so far. We’ve captured a picture of the page in case it gets pulled down, but you can view it here. Additionally, a pretty convincing looking ad appeared (as pictured in the gallery) listing a $299 PS3 Slim. For a while it was widely posted on a variety of blogs and news sites, but then NeoGAF forum member “chubigans” revealed that he Punk’d everyone. Check out his step-by-step guide to making a fake ad.

So, is there a $299 PS3 Slim? From our sources: Definitely. Will we see it at Gamescom? Maybe.

  1. NeoGAF is responsible for the KMart ad and probably the Best Buy ad, as well. The FYE photo came from CAG and is legit. I thought the Xbox 360 Elite price drop was already revealed by Microsoft? I'm not sure how fake the ad could be when Microsoft's already confirmed the drop.

  2. Chris, Microsoft has not confirmed the price drop. They're still saying "Microsoft does not comment on rumor and speculation" when asked about it.

  3. From a business standpoint, it doesn't make a lot of sense to release the PS3 Slim at $299 from the get-go. I mean, if the 80GB PS3 is down to $299–it means those big bulky machines that the stores are trying to get rid of are still gonna sit there.

If I was going to make a choice between the $299 80GB PS3 and the $299 120GB PS3 Slim, I'd go slim. Easily.

  4. That BestBuy ad is laughable. Why would those great games cost $10 each?

  5. They won't have to deal with much overlap in stock when there's a two week gap until the Slim is released. I'm really unsure of what the Uncharted bundles will do since I wouldn't have imagined that they'd still be in the same places they were put about nine or ten months ago when they were first put out on shelves. Stores will have to bundle as much as they can to practically beg people to take them off of their hands.

I initially thought the Best Buy ad could be debunked solely by Lair's inclusion, but then I saw about five copies at Best Buy when I was there yesterday. I imagine they could hope to get a bunch of people to buy systems with the thought of $10 games, but the selection is too good to be plausible.
