UK Fights Childhood Obesity with Wii
March 16th, 2009 | Written by Anthony Perez | Topic: Culture
Videogames have gone from making kids fat and lazy to trim and athletic, at least according to the UK’s chief medical office Sir Liam Donaldson, who is spearheading a pilot project to encourage physical activity among obese kids and teens by issuing them with Nintendo Wii’s.
In a rare moment of lucidity uncommon for public officials who typically band together to fight videogames rather than utilize them, Sir Donaldson figured that the government would have to figure out a way to use games to improve health since videogame play will likely never decrease.
Researchers investigating the energy expenditure of sedentary and dynamic, interactive video game play found that the latter could increase the number of calories burnt by 42 per cent. They concluded that if children engaged in active play for 60 minutes a day over a year, they would burn approximately 7.5 lbs of body fat.
It is actually true that playing games, even traditional games on platforms such as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, as a report from the British Medical Journal – apparently only the British research this shit – shows that 40 minutes of regular game playing will burn 100 calories. Of course, just one serving, or one ounce, of Lays Classic Potato Chips contain 150 calories, so no snacking while gaming.
