Late to the Party: Killzone 2 Ad = Unimpressive
March 17th, 2009 | Written by Anthony Perez | Topic: PlayStation 3I will certainly get raped by diehard PS3 and Killzone 2 fans for this, but let me clarify that in this post I’m only talking about the TV advertisement. I know I’m in the minority because most people really like the ad, but looking at it from the eye of an advertising major, I think it’s uninspired and doesn’t distinguish a very distinguishable game from other shooters on the market. Now that I’ve established that, let me also establish that I realize I’m really late in posting this reaction but it’s also due to the fact that I’m the biggest procrastinator since God. (I mean, seriously, we’re on the verge of slaughtering each other and destroying the earth’s climate. What’s he waiting for? If Armageddon is coming, just bring it already.)
Anyway, my main beef with the ad is that while the angle of “The Life of a Bullet” is cute, it is far from focusing on the unique selling point of the game: its stunning and unparalleled in-game visuals. The ad flexes considerable graphical muscle, but in the form of a cinematic that can be easily replicated by the Xbox 360. Now, the visuals in the commercial may be using the in-game engine for all I know, but for the average viewer it will definitely just look like a cinematic.
Killzone 2′s visuals are ejaculation-inducing, and if the ad had instead showed gameplay including its massive multiplayer mode, it would have done a better job of truly showing just how much better the game looks than any other console game on the market. By going the cinematic route, while vaguely artistic, it fails to easily show people why they haven’t PLAYED a game like this ever before.
What do you guys think?
