EA’s Peter Moore and Media Molecule Call for PS3 Price Cut

More and more gaming execs are jumping on Sony’s case in hopes for a price cut to the PlayStation 3 in order to help boost the platform’s installed base so there would be more potential customers for their games.
In an interview with Bloomberg, EA Sports head Peter Moore carefully worded his feelings on the PlayStation 3′s price while saying EA is still committed to developing on the PS3.
“Sony obviously still has a ways to go with their pricing,” Moore said.
Alex Evans, co-founder of LittleBigPlanet developer Media Molecule, also added his two cents to the matter by essentially saying that all of the games catering towards casual gamers can’t yet make much money because of the PS3′s price point, which may be too high for casual gamers.
“They’ve had all these, you know, SingStars and the EyeToy games. They’ve had their casual gaming audience on the PS2, and they have to translate that over to PS3 now.
Oh wait, that sounds familiar. Oh that’s right, it’s a similar point I made last August in my much maligned op-ed The Fall of Sony: From #1 to (Barely) #2.
“As they do that, I’ll be very happy with that, because that’s how I see PS3 growing. That’s why I’m kind of comfortable with it for now… As soon as they drop their price, ho ho ho.”
Sony’s senior vice president of marketing Peter Dille still holds strong to Sony’s position that the price point won’t be changing soon, as the company is focused more on profitability than installed base.
“Everybody in the development community would love for the PS3 to be free, so they could just sell razor blades.”
Each side has a good argument, though it’s hard to tell who’s correct. Sony has been bleeding money for some time, as has been noted here on SmashPad, but at the same time it needs developer support so that the system has games in the first place. Luckily for Sony, they have the upper-hand in the price cut war since most developers aren’t stupid enough to pull out of the PS3 completely as it still has a large and loyal fanbase. Unfortunately for Sony, it could effect they long-term health of the PlayStation brand as important Playstation exclusive franchises including Devil May Cry, Tekken, and Final Fantasy have announced Xbox 360 support this generation in light of Microsoft’s expanded market share.
