Really? Lost Planet Movie Will Have ‘Dark Knight’ Sized Budget

In a baffling interview, Capcom’s Head of Character Content Business Toshihiro Tokumaru announced that the Lost Planet movie will have a budget nearly as large as last year’s smash hit film, The Dark Knight. When asked about other Capcom properties aside from Street Fighter that may see the light of day, Tokumaru said:

Speaking of “Lost Planet”, that project will cost somewhere between 150 and 200 million dollars to make. The producer on the project is Avi Arad, producer of Spider-Man.

I get the feeling Mr. Tokumaru is throwing around that figure and the producer as a way of giving legitimacy to what will likely be a movie pretty much on par with 10,000 B.C. What’s most shocking is that they’re making such a major investment on such an unknown property.

I could see Street Fighter’s budget demanding those kinds of numbers, and perhaps the concept of Lost Planet will play well to movie audiences when they see the first previews for it. Unfortunately, video game movies carry such a stigma that once people find out it’s an adaptation of a video game, they may decide to spend their money on something different.

  1. It gives us a little bit hope that the movie will be good. They really need a good script if they actually used this much money. I don't think they should advertise it as a movie based on a game though. Lost Planet isn't that known.

  2. Lost Planet has ideas that can be translated to film, but they're generic ideas. I don't have any faith that they'll suddenly get some ideas about how to frame the action. I also think action films benefit from well-written personalities and great villains without being reliant on tired cliches of the genre. I certainly don't see them spending so much money on a relatively obscure franchise.
