Don’t You Disappoint Me, Final Fantasy XIII

ff13

With the recent launch of the official (Japanese) website for Final Fantasy XIII, it looks like Square Enix is getting the big Public Relations and Advertising machine going for the next release in their best-selling franchise. And, quite honestly, I’m pretty excited.

Since Final Fantasy VII, arguably one of the best RPGs of all time, I’ve been a huge fan of the Final Fantasy series. It’s the one franchise that has managed to get away with having a common name, even though (almost) none of the games have any connection to the others. However, the one thing that the Final Fantasy games do have in common is quality. You can almost always expect a good showing from a game with the Final Fantasy name.

And that’s exactly why I’m so nervous.

Two of Square Enix’s latest RPGs, Infinite Undiscovery and The Last Remnant, received mixed reviews at best. For those of you familiar with the genre, you know that in the past a Square Enix RPG would be a good RPG. Now I’m not so sure. I hope Square can get it together and put out another great entry in the series, but I won’t be reserving this one, just in case.

How about you? Are you looking forward to FFXIII?

  1. I have to admit that I have little hope with FFXIII, mainly because of the director. He was the one that directed Final Fantasy X-2, and I belive he did make a few mistakes in that game.

I belive making this person the director for the “main” game was a bad step, he clearly showed that he wasn’t making the FF we all were used to. Maybe that is a good thing? Maybe that is what SE wants, but thats not what I want. If I want a different type of RPG I would just go and buy a different game. But FF is so much more, and he ruined that with X-2.

So now, the only game I belive in is Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy Versus XIII

Infinite Undiscovery was NOT made by SquareEnix, it was made by Tri-Ace, SE just published it.

The Last Remnant was NOT made by the FFXIII team.

We have yet to see a real SE game this gen.

  3. Well, apparenlty FF13's director just X-2'ed FF13, since lots of people already complain about it being too linear and lacking overall interest. I don't know this firsthand, though, but thats what people say. Linear game, no towns, no MP, (no new weapons???), very few interesting places to explore… Its sad and even enraging that a game with such great graphics and pretty cool combat system really missed the opportunity to go the extra mile and be great.

Maybe for FF Versus 13 things will do well. Or maybe when I get my hands on FF13 things are better than what people say. Anyways… Happy holidays!!!
