Top 9 of ‘09: #7 – Resident Evil 5
December 26th, 2008 | Written by Anthony Perez | Topic: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
For the next 7 days, we at Gamer 2.0 will continue to count down the 9 games we’re most interested in going into 2009. We aren’t saying these will be the best games, we’re saying we’re watching these 9 the closest. Our countdown will end with our #1 game on New Years Eve, just in time to ring in another new year of gaming.
Here’s a quick recap:
- #9 – Metal Gear Solid Touch
- #8 – Ghostbusters
And #7 is….
#7 – Resident Evil 5

I was never really a big fan of Resident Evil. Not because of the frights within – though it never really scared me since that has always been Silent Hill’s job – but because of the busted ass controls in the first few installments. Resident Evil 4 changed all that, so I’m glad to see that RE5 looks very much the same. Ironically, that may also be a problem. This might just be Resident Evil 4 Redux.

Though there are some issues I had with the controversial demo as a newbie to the series, I see enough about the game that tells me that a lot of people out there will love Resident Evil 5 despite any issue it may have. The new co-op gameplay and unique setting seem to bring a lot to the table to help get more people in, so Capcom should have a very good first half of 2009 with both this and Street Fighter IV to please the masses.

Resident Evil 4 still has me wetting the bed some nights. The claustrophobic sensation of being overwhelmed at every moment, the stunning art direction, and the emotionally committing story make it one of the greatest games of all time. Resident Evil 5 appears to be making an attempt to improve on this model with cooperative gameplay and the streamlining of some elements like Chris’ inventory.
I really hope Capcom doesn’t stop there and makes a sincere effort to push the genre and story in fresh and exciting directions again, else RE5 will wind up a stale me-too entry in the series.

Resident Evil 5 seems to be much more than a sequel to RE4 - it looks like a replica. Capcom has the outline ready and wants to cast this in a similar mold down to the very fabric of the enemies. The intimate feel of the older titles has been swept away, though the newer titles aren’t lacking in fear – it’s simply been replaced by the fear of being overwhelmed. The action elements work, but I hope that it ascends beyond a mere carbon copy.

Call me crazy, but I still don’t think RE4 was the scariest entry in the series (that honor still belongs to RE2). While it wasn’t the scariest, it definitely was the most innovative and that paid dividends to making it the most popular entry in the series since the first game. If RE5 can take the same innovation as seen in RE4 and up the frights and shrieks from RE2, than Resident Evil 5 might just give me nightmares for months to come…and I welcome them with open arms.

I hardly ever get scared of anything. That being said, I’m not a big fan of the Resident Evil series, but Resident Evil 4 was one of the most entertaining experience that I had last generation. The similarities between the systems of 4 and 5 should mean that core gameplay was in fact revolutionized with 4, and that’s good enough to make me have an interest in this next sequel.

As someone who never understood why these games are popular, I can safely say that Resident Evil 5 is not high on my list of games to check out this year. I’m sure a lot of people will like it, but it really doesn’t interest me all that much.

Despite its problems, Resident Evil 4 was an absorbing experience. I wish Capcom would bite the bullet and change the control scheme for Resident Evil 5, but even in this light, the game is sure to prove more of the quality survival horror action we’ve come to expect.

Though I enjoyed Resident Evil 4 immensely, I’m not sure if I’m ready for Resident Evil 5 and some of the new approaches it’s taking. It appears that the Resident Evil franchise has just thrown horror out the window and replaced it with tactical gameplay. Is that really what the franchise needs? All of my best memories of playing Resident Evil games were running away from hordes of zombies because it was too hard to hit anything or encountering the “licker” for the first time in that cramped hallway in Resident Evil 2.
The Resident Evil franchise shouldn’t be about huge explosions and masterfully pulling off headshots on super zombies. It should be about cramped hallways dammit.

I ignore all Resident Evil fans who clamber for more stodgy tank-controlled horror gameplay. Resident Evil 4 started somethin’, and I want more. With sexy sidekick, please.

I've missed playing this one, but I noticed it was available to download on the recent Xbox Live update, and I'm going to download it once I've got the funds, because you make it sound like just my kind of game.
