For the next 9 days, we at Gamer 2.0 will be counting down the 9 games we’re most interested going into 2009. We aren’t saying these will be the best games, we’re saying we’re watching these 9 the closest. Our countdown will end with our #1 game on New Years Eve, just in time to ring in another new year of gaming.

And we start the countdown with…

#9 – Metal Gear Solid Touch

My iPhone 3G was robbed at knifepoint at 3am here in Queens, NY, in early September. I have yet to replace it since AT&T insists on charging me full price ($399) for a replacement – why can’t I get that discount again? – but even in the midst of my animosity toward Apple and AT&T, I can’t ignore the significance of a mobile Metal Gear Solid game that looks that damn good. I’ve been very outspoken about the prospects of the iPhone and iPod Touch as legitimate gaming platforms. If MGS Touch is a success, then Apple is officially in the game.

Don’t expect anything too crazy, as early word suggests that MGS Touch is in a lot of ways a rail-shooter – your character automatically moves along a set path while you shoot baddies – so there won’t be a lot of crazy stealth action. You move your finger around to aim and you can pinch the screen to zoom, so there’s a heavy focus on just picking up your phone and blasting through a level. It doesn’t scream Metal Gear, but oh well. That’s why we’re watching it.

The fact that a high profile series like Metal Gear Solid is coming to the iPhone gives some real credence to the claim that the iPhone is a gaming console. I really hope that the essence of the franchise isn’t lost in translation to a mobile platform, and Kojima mentioning the title being closer to a shooter than a stealth game amplifies those worries. As our society becomes more mobile, it’s just the next step that our games become more mobile simultaneously. Metal Gear Solid touch could be the title that blows open the doors to this revolution.

As an iPhone owner, it is great to see more developers jumping aboard the App bandwagon and giving the millions of users a chance to truly enjoy and play something both innovative and exciting. With giving the iPhone a new Metal Gear Solid game and the ability to add future levels, Konami has given developers the chance to truly explore the limits of the iPhone and create some of the best handheld games on the market. With such deplorable results seen in recent years with other mobile gaming devices (let’s not even talk about the N-Gage), it is exhilarating to see a worthy addition to the large collection of iPhone games.

The iPod touch has been my biggest purchase of the year, but it’s tough to think about how a Metal Gear Solid game can possibly work on the iPhone/iTouch. It goes without saying that if the price is right, Kojima and Konami have all sorts of wiggle room with the development of this title. I’m just hoping I don’t accidentally hit the home button when I first get my hands on it…

Kojima’s shown his love of Apple products in MGS4, so it’s no surprise that he ended up making a Metal Gear Solid game for the iPhone.

Konami is taking a bold initiative with this action oriented title, at once familiar to Metal Gear Solid fans and yet different. More importantly, touch oriented gameplay is making further inroads, as many consumers want sensory feedback beyond what a mere controller can offer.

Though I’m no big fan of Apple products, the announcement of Kojima’s next Metal Gear Solid game on the iPhone both surprised me and left me a little disappointed. For one thing, I don’t own an iPhone and don’t plan on buying one anytime soon. I’m also not the biggest fan of portable gaming, as I’d rather be playing a game from the view of an HDTV rather than a small, low-res screen. Though I would have liked a port of Metal Gear Solid 4 to the 360, it doesn’t seem too likely through this announcement. I wish the game all of the best when release day comes (as I’m a big fan of the MGS franchise), but just as I’m not going to buy a PS3 to play MGS4, I don’t think this game is going to convince me to buy an iPhone.

It’ll be interesting to see how Konami translate Metal Gear Solid onto a platform as restricted as the iPhone. But given the series’ dedication to its craft, I won’t be the least bit surprised if it turns out to be a winner.
