December 29th, 2008 | Written by Anthony Perez | Topic: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360
For the next 4 days, we at Gamer 2.0 will continue counting down the 9 games we’re most interested going into 2009. We aren’t saying these will be the best games, we’re saying we’re watching these 9 the closest. Our countdown will end with our #1 game on New Years Eve, just in time to ring in another new year of gaming.
Here’s a quick recap:
- #9 – Metal Gear Solid Touch
- #8 – Ghostbusters
- #7 – Resident Evil 5
- #6 – Prototype
- #5 – MadWorld
And #4 is…
#4 – Brutal Legend

I hate to sound like a groupie, but Tim Schafer is kind of a god. His games are never played by anyone, so they always fail and it takes him a long time to have a publisher sign him up to create a new game, but there is no doubting the quality of his work. I have a ton of faith in the man, so I’m sure it’ll probably be damn good. What’s exciting is that Brutal Legend has the underpinning of rock music, and the star power of Jack Black. So perhaps, just perhaps, Mr. Schafer will finally get some much-deserved and widespread appreciation.

This game is Metal. I like Metal; I like Tim Schafer’s work; so I should like this. It’s a bit of an unknown quantity for me, but that’s also part of why I’m looking forward to it so much.

It’s safe to say that I don’t really get heavy metal, but Tim Schafer has a long and storied developer catalog that placates any of my concerns for the subject material. It is difficult for any developer who has had success under certain market conditions to evolve with the times, but Schafer has this certain old world sensibility of good design that is classic in any age. Brutal Legend makes me envision Guitar Hero the Adventure Game. It’s to his credit that Tim Schafer can move so fluidly from one subject matter to another.

Though Psychonauts is one of the biggest game on my pile of shame from the last generation, I do hope to not make that same mistake twice when Brutal Legend finally comes out in 2009. Though Tim Schafer’s gotten the short end of the stick lately with publisher issues before Psychonauts’ launch and now Brutal Legend being dropped by Activision into EA’s lap, I’m hoping Tim Schafer gets better results from all of the trouble this game’s gotten lately.
The little bit I’ve seen of the game at the VGA’s looks very promising, especially with a talented and funny guy like Jack Black showing off his excitement for the game by chanting Tim’s name while shooting a flamethrower in the air.

Retaining my spot in the Tim Schafer bandwagon, I believe Brutal Legend will rock the whole industry’s face off. Jack Black is a perfect fit into the role of Eddie Riggs with his dripping enthusiasm for Rock culture. Hopefully the lamentations of every single gaming journalist since Psychonaut’s unfortunate failure in ‘05 have convinced the gaming populous to take a serious look at purchasing Double Fine’s next story.

Psychonauts had some of the best characters and level designs of any game from last gen (The Milkman Conspiracy is still one of my favorite levels EVER). It will be interesting to see if the combination of Schafer and Jack Black can amount to anything more than rancid humor with a rock undertone. Although I find Black’s blend of humor mildly irritating, I trust Schafer’s past experiences with such hits as Grim Fandango and Monkey Island to expect nothing but greatness from Brutal Legend.

Brutal Legend is the work of Tim Schafer. And Tim Schafer crafted Grim Fandango, easily the best game I’ve ever played. That’s reason enough for this to be high on my radar; even if I don’t particularly like metal.

I’m a big Jack Black fan. I’m also big video game fan. And as such, I like where Brutal Legend is heading. Let’s just hope it gets released this decade.

Bottom Line: Let’s hope this one lives up to the hype. (This coming from quite a Grim Fandango fan.)

Metal, myths, hot rods, demonic babies in carriages and a game hand-crafted for Jack Black (who, as a voice actor, redeemed himself completely with Kung Fu Panda). Could this be the one to put Schafer on the mainstream map? With an umlaut in the title, let’s hope so.
