For the next 5 days, we at Gamer 2.0 will continue counting down the 9 games we’re most interested going into 2009. We aren’t saying these will be the best games, we’re saying we’re watching these 9 the closest. Our countdown will end with our #1 game on New Years Eve, just in time to ring in another new year of gaming.

Here’s a quick recap:

And #5 is…

#5 – MadWorld

I’m getting the pessimistic experienced game journalist feeling that MadWorld’s gameplay is going to be mediocre. You can call me a Scrooge in light of the holidays, but I find it valid considering the game is being developed by a brand new studio with 3 – count them, THREE (Bayonetta, Infinite World, and MadWorld) – original games due out next year. Luckily, its founders have experience working on hits such as Viewtiful Joe, Resident Evil 4, and Okami.

The thing about MadWorld is that even if it feels average, it will definitely get some style points for its ill visual style.

I really need something to play on my Wii. This game looks great! It’s got a really cool art style that you don’t see too often. Add to that I haven’t played a decent beat-em-up in years and Madworld becomes a game that I really must play once it comes out.

There is some violence that feels immediate and impactful. Then there is MadWorld, which looks like so much like a caricature that it’s hard to believe this bloody and brutal and remorseless game could have anything to do with the kind of real world violence that is at once so horrible and so unforgiving. This is the kind of game that should be made for the Wii, the kind that’s stylized and over the top and committed to making good use of the Wiimote.

Looking back to one of Clover Studio’s last works, God Hand, it’s easy to see where some of the influences for MadWorld come from. That kind of over-the-top action gameplay seems a little strange for the typical Wii audience, but the sense of style and entertainment that this game looks to offer is reminiscent of 2008’s No More Heroes.

When I look at the Wii this generation, I can’t help but laugh at the nature of the industry. We’ve been pessimists all along saying Nintendo would be done because the Wii is just a gimmick. And then MadWorld gets revealed. This is the single coolest looking game coming out in 2009. While the Xbox 360 and PS3 have a more “mature” nature, the reality of it is that most of their great “mature” games are found on both consoles. The Wii has quite an exclusive here, and hopefully it’s one that redefines “style.”

When I first saw a video for MadWorld I thought it was a compilation of unfinished colorless drawings thrown together, mixed with a little bit of mindless brutality. Although I give it props for its creative art style, I can’t but help the feeling that the combat will turn out to be incredibly shallow. It will be interesting to see what a new developer can do against the other filler games on the Wii, but one thing is for sure- the Wii lacks enough games to challenge the Mature nature of the Xbox 360 and PS3, and MadWorld looks to fill that gap the Wii desperately needs.

I’m always interested by games that are developed exclusively for a single console. It shows that the development team is concentrating their efforts on perfecting the experience with a single system in mind. Madworld, then, could be one of the Wii’s finest hours.

Every time I see screens for MadWorld I find myself saying “Wow, they’re really not pulling any punches with this one!” and it seems like they’re really pushing the whole “hardcore gamer” and “mature themes” with this one. Think Wii is all about senior citizens bowling? I’ll tear you in half and throw you through a giant fan!
