For the last 9 days, we at Gamer 2.0 have counted down the 9 games we’re most interested in going into 2009. We aren’t saying these will be the best games, we’re saying we’re watching these 9 the closest. Our countdown has brought us to New Years Day with our #1 game, just in time to ring in another new year of gaming. Here’s a quick recap:

And #1 is…

#1 – Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

First a quick note: Why isn’t Killzone 2 on the list? Your guess is as good as mine. Each staff member put together a list of 9 games they were most interested in going into 2009. Uncharted 2 ended up on the most lists, therefore it nabs our #1 spot. Killzone 2 landed on only one staffer’s list. I honestly believe people just forgot.

With that said, there isn’t much known about Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. That’s a lot like our #2 pick, Alan Wake. Either way, Uncharted was one of the few really good exclusive PlayStation 3 games for the console early in its life cycle, and I’m definitely glad to see it return in 2009. We bitch and moan a lot about sequels in this industry, but sometimes there’s nothing wrong with a little refined familiarity.

I want to play this game and all, but I would’ve picked Street Fighter IV. No disrespect to Naughty Dog, Uncharted was a solid game and I’m confident the sequel will be even better. But I’ve been waiting 10 years for a real Street Fighter sequel.

Sequels are all too ubiquitous in this industry, but Uncharted is the kind of game that deserves to have all of the wrinkles in its gameplay and mechanics smoothed out. With a solid technical and artistic foundation, Among Thieves has time to refine.

Uncharted is one of the finest single-player games of this generation, so it’s no surprise that the sequel is a highly anticipated game. Nathan Drake had a ton of charm and a hell of a sense of style with that infamous half-tucked shirt of his. The bits of info I’ve read from the Game Informer cover article makes it seem like Naughty Dog knows what they’re doing with Nathan’s latest adventure that seems to be a bit more dangerous than he initially expected.

The original Uncharted was a bit of a sleeper in 2007. With a hit under their belt, expectations have got to be high at Naughty Dog to deliver a sequel worthy of its predecessor. While not much is known about Uncharted 2 minus the recent GameInformer cover story, a recent teaser hints at another engrossing story and fantastic visuals. Add on the fact that the first Uncharted sold over 2 million copies internationally, it’s no secret that the sequel will receive ample funding to buff out any impurities.

Uncharted was an exciting, adventurous and ultimately repetitive game. On one it played out almost exactly like Tomb Raider and Gears of War, while on the other it felt like nothing else than a high-res game of whack-a-mole. If Naughty Dog can still deliver the same gripping storyline but add a few bit of refinements in the gameplay, we might be looking at the PS3’s Game of the Year for 2009.

While I’m not a fan of sequels per se, I have to agree with Anthony. Refinement, from time to time, is a good thing. If Uncharted 2 receives the same lavish attention to detail as its forebear, it could be another fine entry in the series. Moreover, it bucks the trend of being a straight shooter, and with a heady dosage of adventuring, there are a plethora of reasons to eagerly anticipate Naughty Dog’s newest installment.

In all honesty I never spent too much time with Uncharted. Looking at it, it gave off the vibe of “dude Tomb Raider” and that was essentially how I still view it. People seemed to like it though, and it’s not like the PS3 couldn’t use another pillar game to stand on.

With the PlayStation 3 on life support with rumors about their best games headed to the Xbox 360, Sony needs as much exclusive content they can get. Aside from Killzone 2, Uncharted 2 may look to fill that void of quality.
