Country Music Diversifies Rock Band; Harmonix Should Tap Community

Get your beat-up guitar, old Ford truck, and hometown heartbreak ready, because Harmonix released its newest track pack for Rock Band and Rock Band 2 today, the Country 5-Pack. The Country Pack represents the first real deviation from the represented genres in Rock Band, and includes the songs below:
- Brad Paisley – “Mud on the Tires” ($2)
- Brooks & Dunn – “Hillbilly Deluxe” ($2)
- Dierks Bentley – “Free & Easy (Down the Road I Go)” ($2)
- Dixie Chicks – “Sin Wagon” ($2)
- Miranda Lambert – “Gunpowder & Lead” ($2)
Honestly, I really don’t like country music. At all. But what I do like is the fact that Harmonix is diversifying the Rock Band music portfolio a little bit. Adding songs like this are a great way to bring more music fans to the glory that is Rock Band, and I think anything that turns more people on to gaming is a great idea.
That being said, I think that Harmonix should listen to the community when it comes to which genres get tracks next. I know that there are a million details in everything from licensing rights, to royalties, to song masters, but I think that the community should have some say. Why not put up a poll on Harmonix’s site with a simple voting mechanic and choices like Rock, Heavy Metal, Punk, Country, etc. as options? This way it keeps it broad enough to give Harmonix the leeway to figure out which songs work the best, but also gives the millions of people playing RB and RB2 a choice.
What about you? What kind of music would you like to see in Rock Band next?
