Capcom Calls New Strider “A Possibility”

striderIn a recent interview with 1up, Capcom head honcho Keiji Inafune said that the company is seriously considering reviving the Strider series.

Capcom has a lot of good characters, both past and present, and I have a strong interest in bringing some of the past characters back. When you’re in Japan you don’t really think about the popularity and interest in Strider or Street Fighter characters, and so we’ve kept them on hold. But since making the HD remix of Street Fighter II and Street Fighter IV, there’s a possibility that we could make another Strider game. It’s one of the franchises that I have an interest in reviving, so I think there’s a real possibility that we will make another Strider game.

Over the years we have seen tons of classic games remade for the next generation, including everything from Bionic Commando to Street Fighter to practically the entire Final Fantasy library. This news, though, is particularly interesting because Strider has always seemed to be a somewhat forgotten gem that hasn’t received much consideration for the whole “remake” treatment. A Strider sequel, however, was released for the PlayStation 2 back in 2000 to a fairly warm reception with a rating of 75% out of 100% on GameRankings.com.

Strider was a hell of a good game back on the Genesis and we’re excited about the possibility of a sequel. The problem is that remakes are often hit or miss. Sometimes they capture the spirity of the original, but all too often they lose some intagible quality that made them great back in their heyday. Just ask Sonic.
