Web Watch #1: Zombie Lawsuits

Webwatch is our weekly homage to all the users out there.  We scour the web in search of the best users comments on a particular topic then post them for all to see.

This week’s topic is the Dead Rising lawsuit.  With the recent news of the Dead Rising lawsuit being dismissed we thought we take a look back at the best comments on this issue.

via joystiq.com “Even if the theme of consumerism was in both works, that just makes both works a parody of reality. The zombie theme itself parodies real people, so I guess MKR should sue all future zombie creations and it should be sued by all past zombie creations. Once that’s done, we the people should sue all zombie creators.” BigD145

via gamespot.com “As much as I agree with this outcome and can’t help but laugh when I think of the label they put right on the cover stating “This is not endorsed by George Romero or Dawn of the Dead” or something to that effect. That alone says “We ripped off their ideas, but we are protecting ourselves”. Either way, since it is 2 completely different forms of entertainment, I think the court did the right thing on this one.” jimmarko21876

via Escapist forums “Dawn of the dead had extremely fast and voracious zombies. Dead rising had the more “traditional” shambling zombies. The survivors and other humans in the game were the real danger. The closest the movie came to that was the security guards.  Never mind the plot/protagonist of both being completely different outside of the bulk of the movie taking place in a mall.” Kross

via Horror Forum “Where does the line gets drawn for ideas?  Ok, zombies + mall is a well known mixture due to DotD.  But so are all the standard “rules” about zombies in general (any of the series of GR).  And can anything really be written at all without SOME kind of rip off of Shakespeare?  Now if they denied that they knew about George’s movies and just came up with this off the top of their heads, then I have a problem.  But what about all the other elements that everyone else has done?  Should this apply to all movies?  “oops, already have a helecopter fight scene in an action movie, can’t do that again”.  Well, there would be no more romantic comedies as that is a formula.  I don’t know, just rambling.” MissKatonic666

via 1Up “Lets sue eachother over every stupid little thing. So these idiots honestly believe that they can sue over the fact that the game is about zombies in a mall? Because thats the only major similarity to the damn movie. I guess nobody is supposed to make movies, write books or anything now because everything has already been done before and you’ll get your ass sued by greedy money-grabbing retards.” Zach6848
